The short answer is that MCS certification is not legally required to install solar PV or heat pumps. You can hold the right electrical qualifications, do excellent work, and never join the scheme.

The longer answer is that it decides which half of the market you can sell to. Almost every government incentive a residential customer might use runs through an MCS certificate, and a customer who cannot claim a grant usually does not buy.

What MCS certification actually covers

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the UK quality mark for small-scale renewables. It certifies both products and the businesses that install them.

Certification applies to installations up to 50kW for electrical technologies and 45kW for heating, rising to 70kW where several heating units sit in the same installation. Above those sizes you are outside the scheme entirely, which is worth knowing before you quote a large commercial roof.

Each technology is certified separately, so a business moving from solar into heat pumps adds to its certification rather than extending it automatically. Heat pump work also brings its own planning question, since MCS 020 and the noise assessment decide whether a job stays within permitted development.

What you give up without it

The grants. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air-source or ground-source heat pump and £5,000 towards a biomass boiler. From 21 July 2026 the air-source grant rose to £9,000 for households heating with oil or LPG, which is a strong argument to put in front of off-gas customers and one many businesses have not updated their sales material for. In Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan offers £7,500 towards a heat pump. Warm Homes: Local Grant runs through MCS too.

Every one of those requires an MCS certified installation. No certificate, no grant. Since BUS moved to V5 on 28 April 2026 the voucher mechanism is unchanged, but a mandatory upfront discount now has to appear on the customer's quote and invoice, and Ofgem can audit whether you applied it.

The commercial gates most people forget. Grants are the obvious loss. The quieter one is that MCS turns up all over the rest of the transaction. Insurers often require it for renewable technology at a policyholder's address. Finance companies may reserve their best lending rates for certified work, because MCS reduces their risk under the Consumer Credit Act. Building Control, the NHBC and a number of planning authorities ask for a certificate as evidence of quality assurance.

Findability. Certified businesses get a listing on the MCS Find an Installer tool, which is where a good share of residential solar enquiries start.

There is also free trade body membership attached: heat pump businesses get affiliate membership of the Heat Pump Association, solar PV and battery businesses get Solar Energy UK.

The trap: you cannot certify a job after the fact

This one catches people out and it is worth stating plainly. An installation cannot be certified retrospectively. If the system was not installed under certification, no amount of paperwork afterwards will produce a certificate.

The practical consequence lands months later. A customer comes to remortgage, insure or sell, is asked for the MCS certificate, and there is nothing to give them. That conversation is unpleasant and it is unfixable.

What certification involves

The process runs through an independent certification body, not MCS directly. Which one you choose depends largely on the technologies they cover.

Before you apply, MCS expects you to have four things in place.

Understand the standards. You need to know the Installation Standards for your technologies and be ready to show how the business meets them.

Name three roles. The scheme requires a Licensee who signs the Installer Agreement and carries ultimate responsibility, a Main Contact who handles scheme queries, and one or more Technical Supervisors. In smaller businesses the same person can hold more than one role. The Technical Supervisor matters most day to day: they confirm that a specific installation complies, and their name is a mandatory field on every certificate you create. You will also need to evidence their qualifications.

Document your processes. Appendix A of the Installer Operating Requirements scales what is expected to the size of your business, so a fifteen-person operation is not held to the same documentation as a national one.

Complete a compliant installation. You need one to be assessed against.

What it actually costs

There is no single published price, and any article that gives you one figure is guessing. MCS is explicit that the total varies: you pay your certification body's fees, which differ between bodies, plus £30 for every installation you register with MCS.

Budget for the ongoing per-installation cost rather than treating certification as a one-off. A business doing 30 installs a month is registering £900 a month in certificates, which is a line item, not a rounding error.

If you are based in Scotland, the MCS Certification Fund covers 75% of certification fees up to £1,000. It is Scottish Government money and the eligibility is narrow: you need to be an SME, hold at least one registered office in Scotland, and carry out heating installations in Scotland. It runs until the money runs out or the end of March 2027, whichever comes first. There is no equivalent for the rest of the UK.

The assessment has changed

If you are already certified, the thing to pay attention to is not cost. MCS has moved to a redeveloped installer scheme, rolling out through 2026 and into 2027, and your certification body decides when your turn comes. The backstop is 31 March 2027, by which point every MCS certified installer has to be on it.

The technical standards carry over unchanged. What changed is how you are assessed. The old scheme audited a quality management system, which a business could pass with a well-kept binder that bore little resemblance to how jobs actually ran. The new model is risk-based and looks at delivered quality, so the evidence has to come out of your real job records.

That is an operations question more than a compliance one. If an assessor asks which Technical Supervisor signed off a particular March installation and what evidence supports it, you want that answer in minutes.

Umbrella schemes, if you are not certified yet

For a business that is qualified but not yet certified, umbrella schemes offer a route in. A certified company oversees your work, which lets your customers access grants while you build a track record towards your own certification.

They typically handle the compliance and administrative overhead and provide quality oversight. It is a reasonable stepping stone, though you are operating under someone else's certification and to their standards, so it is worth being clear about where the responsibility sits before you sign.

Where the evidence has to live

Certification is not really a document exercise. Once you hold it, the work is producing an evidence trail for every job: test results, site photos, commissioning data, the Technical Supervisor who signed it off, and the certificate itself, all findable long after the van has left.

That is the same evidence chain that solar commissioning and heat pump commissioning under BUS V5 depend on, and it sits alongside the grid connection side of the same job. When those records live across engineers' phones, inboxes and a spreadsheet, assembling one job's compliance history is a morning's work. When they sit on the project itself, it is a click.
